Repeat and fold down the other three corners to the center.

C) Fold down the 4 corners that you made in step B to the center. Flip it over

Scrapbook Blog Design

What was behind my idea of site re-design?

I thought of bringing fresh life to my blog and since I moved to Wu Wei, a WordPress theme that allows me to upload my own blog backgrounds, What the Heck! I can make my own backgrounds! So, I started messing around with free patterned backgrounds but I found that most of them were unreadable between the font colors that the WordPress template offered and the patterns/colors I selected. Then it struck me that I needed to make a background with two areas- a white/cream colored center area which would be under the blog text and a patterned outer area that would not be below the blog text.

How did I create the background for this blog?

A chance search for “blog backgrounds” in Google led me to some brilliant sites offering great wallpapers and backgrounds for free. I started first with www.shabbyblogs.com but I couldnā€™t use their backgrounds on my free WordPress blog. I saw this background there which made me decide that I wanted something similar- trees, a woodland theme perhaps and maybe some owls ā€˜cos I craft mostly at night!

From there, jumping from one link to another led me to this gem of a site – www.Kevinandamanda.com ! I followed Amandaā€™s step-by-step tutorial to make my blog back ground. It was such a well-written, easy to follow template that I could follow it even with my basic Photoshop abilities! I think I will create a similar background for my Twitter page and as desktop wallpaper at home to sort of tie the whole thing together.

www.kevinandamanda.com
www.kevinandamanda.com for recipes and scrapbooking!!

Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements

Papers, ribbons, stitches and buttons: from www.Kevinandamanda.com

How can you make this look your own?

Iā€™m not a designer and I can hardly claim to be an expert but I thought Iā€™d make some more backgrounds just for fun.

I made more blog backgrounds using the same tutorial. Do download them and share them with your friends tooā€¦Do let me know in the comments which one is your favorite and also leave links to your blogs ā€“ so that I can see these backgrounds if you use them.

The first background I made is this Teal and Red one- just right in warmth and coolness- Iā€™ve put teal buttons on the side.

The second background is Red and Greenā€¦I know its too early for Christmas, but who said you canā€™t have a red and green background in August! This one has ribbons and buttery yellow buttons for style!

Origami Box-Tutorial

Wanna make simple Origami boxes with lids? Here’s how you can-

Stuff you’ll need:
  • A pair of Scissors( the smaller the better)
  • Glue ( Fevicol or any other white glue is good)
  • Square Sheets of Paper( I use two different colours)
  • Patience

NOTE: Keep some extra paper to use for decorating the box lids and to make a flat lining for the boxes.

How to make the boxes:

NOTE: Instructions are to make the lid, repeat steps with smaller paper to make the base.

  1. Collect your stuff and settle down at a table- use a flat surface for folding paper…I use a plastic chopping board…

    Step 1-Gather your stuff

Step 9 Tuck the loose flap in
  • On both sides, tuck the flap in and flatten it till the points meet in the center of the box.

    Step 10 Flatten the flap
    Step 10 Flatten the flap
  • Great!! Repeat this with a slightly larger square if you want to make a lid for the box (or a slightly smaller square to make a base for the box)

    Finished Box Base

  • Your finished box should look something like this. Decorate it to your heart’s content- sequins/paint/thread/paper cutouts/ stones/ ribbon/block print on it- whatever you want!! This box is adaptable to any number of looks- you can make it formal as I have or make it casual by using magazine/newspaper pages.

  • How to Buy Beads

I recently found myself regretting my eagerness in buying beads- the reason being two of the plastic striped beads I bought were not pierced. I feel so bad each time I think of it..Sigh…I wish someone had told me to notice all these things, maybe then I would’ve spotted the flaws. I think it’s about time we stopped to consider before we buy beads. Here’s a list of points to consider before purchasing beads.

    1. Check the length of the beads for uniformity. See that they are not too heavy or too big (long) for stringing onto any eye pin or headpin if you want to make earrings with them.
    2. Carry a headpin or eye pin with you and ask the seller if you can place the bead on it to check the balance of the bead.
    3. When buying headpins or eye pins try and check to see that they are not bent or tarnished.
    4. When buying ear wires check to see that the end “eye” loop is present( In the packet that I bought there were three ear wires that didn’t have loops)
    5. The beads should be pierced and have sufficiently large holes or loops for stringing.
    6. The beads must have an even color and should not have any flaky bits.
    7. Check metallic beads for tarnished portions (unless you’re going for the antique look.)
    8. Check if the beads have sharp edges or cracks in the bead or near the holes for stringing. The beads should have rounded or ‘puckered’Ā  ends (soft – not sharp).
    9. Textured beads should not have cracks in narrow areas or irregular bumps.
    10. Dots on round beads and other texture elements should be solidly attached. If you can flick the dot off the bead with your nail then the bead is not too sturdy .
    11. Powdery bead residue should not fall out of a bead when you tap it.
    12. Take a friend along to help you decide what to buy especially if you are color blind like me
    13. Study semi precious stone beads and pearls before you buy and always go to a reputed dealer.Ā  A good book on minerals and semi-precious stones is worth the money you spend for it if you plan to buy a lot of them

Please feel free to add more points as comments.

I have never been a “girly” girl ever but the past few days I have gotten so hooked to romantic, Victorian and vintage style finds on Etsy. Some of the creations are so gorgeous it just hurts my brain to even think about them.

    New Origami Boxes- pics included

Another new month and I have stumbled on yet another hobby to keep me busy…Paper Craft!

    • 3 paper boxes made from handmade Origami paper from Sri Aurobindo Handmade Paper, Pondicherry ( a pack of 50 squares in different colours from Landmark, Spencer’s Plaza)
    • 5 bookmarks – 4 given to friends and family, one is MINE šŸ™‚
    • Customized a journal for my friend- with a bookmark and gift tag.
    • A pair of earrings

    Get Ideas for Bead Jewelry

    Waiting for Inspiration
    Waiting for Inspiration

My brain wentĀ numb forĀ a few days andĀ I stopped making earrings just as abruptly as I started making them-dunno if the success went to my head or the fear did…Will I be able to make more…Have to wait and see..
What have I been doing with my time? Been put back into work-reluctant but happy…Did a bit of shopping for a sofa and at the Valluvar Kottam Craft Bazaar.

Thought and thought a lot about what project I should post- I have a very bad habit of having my fingers in quite a few pies at the same time-Then I got this brilliant idea-why not post about ideas and the things that inspire us?

    Ā

    Ā

    Ā

    Ā

So I put down what I do when I need ideas for jewelry:

    1. I read my Google reader feeds
    2. I google”beads” (Very obvious, I know)
    3. I search for colour schemes with a Color Scheme Generator
    4. I pull out clothes from my wardrobe that do not have jewelry to match and just find beads from my stash that match with them (Necessity is the mother of invention isn’t it?)
    5. I play with my beads-I take out some eye pins(gold and silver and then just sit and stack different beads from my box in as different arangements I can come up with
    6. I linger around sites like:
      www.Craftster.org
      www.Etsy.com
    7. I love to use the Virtual Bead Board, an awesome feature in www.FireMountainGems.com that lets you play around with thousands of beads all just after signing up for a free membership with them….While you’re there, you can check out the video tutorials and their “Gem of the week” section.
How do you get ideas for jewelry? What inspires you? What are the techniques you use? I’d love to hear about them…Do drop by and comment on this..
